Background & What Makes It Special

The facility is considered the only freely accessible climbing area on a listed historical monument in Germany. It is managed by the Kölner Alpenverein, with the club's training department overseeing day-to-day operations. A dedicated set of rules applies to all users.

Access & Age Requirements

Entry is free of charge, making the site particularly accessible to schools and youth groups. All climbers must register once via an online form with the Kölner Alpenverein — registration is the only way to activate liability insurance coverage, which is also a condition of the City of Cologne's operating permit. Children aged 13 and under may only climb accompanied by an adult experienced in belay techniques. Young people between 14 and 18 either need written consent from their legal guardians or must be accompanied by someone proficient in top-rope belay methods.

Current Information

The City of Cologne is currently carrying out extensive restoration work on the Hohenzollernbrücke, which also affects the climbing walls. For the duration of these works — and any subsequent curing periods — short-notice partial closures of approximately one to three days are possible. Sections of wall that are out of bounds will be marked by the City of Cologne with barrier tape threaded through the bolt hangers of the affected wall segments.
