Shopping centre in Cologne's Weiden district: opened in 1972 as the fourth major centre in West Germany on former fields, today around 160 shops.
Of the original 60 shops from 1972, only the Stadtsparkasse bank has remained a tenant to this day. On its opening day, 9 March 1972, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger noted that a shopping centre was opening where sheep had grazed only shortly before.

History
When the centre was built in the early 1970s, Weiden was still barely developed and surrounded by fields and meadows. At its opening, the Rhein-Center was the fourth large shopping centre of its kind in West Germany. Despite the rural setting, the location was seen as economically promising, as Weiden was transforming from a village into a densely populated Cologne suburb. The project was developed by ECE Projektmanagement GmbH, which invested 50 million Deutschmarks at the time; leasing today is handled by ECE Marketplaces GmbH & Co. KG.
The 1972 centre
Originally home to 60 shops in the mid-to-upper price range, the centre also housed a kindergarten and a children's play area with carousels and play equipment, alongside services such as car washing and a petrol station. Parking was free at first, restaurants were allowed to open on Sundays, and smoking was permitted inside the building. Planned and already under-construction high-rise housing developments nearby ensured a solid customer base from the immediate catchment area.
Today
Following renovations and expansions in 1995 and 2008, the retail mix is now dominated by clothing and hardware stores, with a dedicated dining area added in the basement. The number of shops stood at 180 in January 2016, dipping slightly by May 2024. The children's play area was scrapped for cost reasons, and unlike in the early years, parking now incurs a fee after 30 minutes. The operator puts the core catchment area at 37,500 residents, with the wider catchment area exceeding 1.3 million.
Location and access
The centre lies about 10 km west of Cologne's city centre. By car, it can be reached via the A1 motorway (Köln-Lövenich exit), the A4, or the B55 federal road. The Weiden Zentrum stop for light rail and buses sits directly at the building. S-Bahn connections run via Lövenich station (around 500 metres away) and Weiden West, though these links were only established roughly 30 years after the centre opened.
