Did you know?

The Thomaskirche didn't actually get a church hall until 1987 — about 19 years after the community centre opened in 1968 — which is why the name 'Thomaskirche' only became official over time; earlier proposals had included 'Anne Frank House' and 'Dr. Martin Luther King House'.

History

Plans for a community centre in the northernmost parish district date back to the 1950s. In 1963, the Protestant Congregation of Cologne resolved to establish a "community centre on Lentstraße", which opened on 29 November 1968 with meeting rooms and housing for parish deaconesses and a sexton. It was renamed "Thomashaus" in 1976. A second construction phase added a church nave, consecrated in 1987, and over time the name "Thomaskirche" became official.

Architecture

The building was designed by Ludwig Groth using skeleton frame construction. The nave has an octagonal floor plan topped by a distinctive pyramid-shaped ceiling.

Organ

At the opening in 1968, only a small organ positive was available. A larger organ by the firm Willi Peter was inaugurated in 1981, later moved into the new nave, and donated to the Auferstehungskirche in Wolnzach in 2007. Since October 2007, the church has housed an organ with 15 stops on two manuals and pedal, transferred from Cologne's Kreuzkirche; it is built in the Saxon tradition, inspired in particular by the work of Gottfried Silbermann.

Today and the Future

The Thomaskirche is largely sustained by volunteer work, with a strong focus on children's and youth activities. Due to declining membership, it is scheduled to be deconsecrated in autumn 2026 alongside the Lutherkirche and subsequently demolished.
