Audi founder August Horch developed his first automobile in Ehrenfeld from 1899 onwards – and the Benedikt Klein margarine factory produced up to 16 tonnes of margarine per hour at its peak.
History
The area was settled as far back as the first to third centuries AD; in 1996 a Roman country villa came to light near the Mechternkirche. The field name Mechtern derives from the Latin "ad martyres sanctos" — according to legend, Saint Gereon was martyred here for his Christian faith. Until the mid-19th century the land remained largely agricultural: in 1840, only 32 people lived in the three clusters of Mechtern, Subbelrath and Ziegelfeld. The idea of founding a suburb is attributed to printer and antiquarian Franz Anton Kreuter; the decision to build was taken in 1845. The name comes from the route through the Ehrentor gate along Ehrenstraße to the Ehrenstraßener Feld. In 1867, with over 4,000 residents, Ehrenfeld became an independent municipality; town rights followed on 8 October 1879.
Oldest Façade
The first residential buildings — three-windowed houses — were erected in 1845 on Venloer Straße and Subbelrather Straße. The oldest surviving façade of this type is Haus Mertens at Venloer Straße 260, built in brick in 1853, which long housed a butcher's shop.
Industry
In its founding year, Philipp Hoffmann's wallpaper factory opened, soon followed by metalworking, chemical, glassmaking and electrical engineering companies. The Helios AG, founded in 1882, pioneered alternating current technology — its tower on Heliosstraße survives as a listed industrial monument. The Benedikt Klein margarine works produced the "Botterram" brand from 1888, churning out up to 16 tonnes per hour at peak before closing in 1983. Future Audi founder August Horch also launched his enterprise here in 1899.
Today
Ehrenfeld's main shopping streets are shaped by Turkish-run businesses alongside shops owned by people from the Near and Far East and Africa. A growing number of theatres, restaurants and bars has made it an increasingly sought-after place to live — a trend clearly reflected in rising rents.
