The current church does not stand on the site of the original medieval St. Quirinus chapel – that chapel was located about 700 metres away, burned down in 1557, and was only finally demolished over a century later, in 1665.

History

The dedication traces back to a medieval St. Quirinus Chapel located roughly 700 metres south-east of the present site, which belonged to the Fronhof of Cologne's Kunibert Collegiate Church. It was first mentioned in 1286, when the Niehl parish of St. Katharina — also part of the Kunibert foundation — appointed a vicar to serve the congregation there. The chapel burned down in 1557 and was demolished in 1665.

Architecture

The current church was built in 1927 to designs by Eduard Endler. It takes the form of a three-nave early Christian basilica with a semicircular apse. Historicising columns with carved capitals support horizontal beams, above which smooth clerestory walls rise, pierced by round-arched windows.

Later Changes

In 1966 the stepped gables were removed and replaced by a plain basilica façade. A detached bell tower was added to the side, reaching its present height of 24 metres in 1976.
