Alte Dorfkirche Köln-Junkersdorf

Medieval village church with a Gothic choir — once the parish church of St. Pankratius, now a small chapel after centuries of fire, war, and reinvention.

Rainy day Indoor

The Alte Dorfkirche (Old Village Church), formerly St. Pankratius, served as the Catholic parish church of Cologne-Junkersdorf for centuries. Its role as a principal place of worship ended in 1908, when a larger parish church was built to serve a growing neighbourhood.

Did you know?

The old village church survived two devastating fires (1676 and 1754), was converted into a kindergarten in 1957 after losing its religious function – and its oldest part, the medieval choir, only returned to sacred use as a chapel in 1987, after 30 years as a kindergarten.

History

The church is first mentioned in a document from 1223, when it appears as property of the collegiate church of St. Gereon in Cologne. A century later, in 1324, Archbishop Heinrich II confirmed the incorporation of the parish into the Gereon foundation. Fire struck twice — in 1676, the interior was badly damaged; in 1754, the building burned to the ground except for the choir. The nave was rebuilt in the aftermath, and two side aisles were added in the mid-19th century.

From Parish Church to Chapel

As Junkersdorf's population grew rapidly around 1900, a new Neo-Gothic church was built — but the old building was spared demolition. When the new church was consecrated in 1908, the Pankratius dedication was transferred to it. The Neo-Gothic successor itself was later replaced: badly damaged in the Second World War, it gave way to yet another new building in 1960.

Today

In 1957 the old village church was converted into a kindergarten. Its oldest surviving section — the polygonal apse of the medieval choir — was given a sacred purpose once more in 1987, when it was restored and opened as a small chapel.
