A massive medieval city gate and landmark of the Severin quarter – an outstanding example of Cologne fortification architecture.

The Severin Gate is one of the four surviving gatehouses of the medieval city wall and, alongside the church of St. Severin, the landmark of the lively Severin quarter ("Vringsveedel").

The gate of the Südstadt

With its mighty hexagonal tuff-stone tower, the Severin Gate is regarded as an excellent example of medieval fortification architecture. It stands on Chlodwigplatz at the southern end of Severinstraße – the heart of one of Cologne's most authentic quarters and the starting point of many carnival processions.
