A column for remembrance

Around the turn of the century, Bismarck towers and columns arose across Germany, often conceived as "fire columns" for lighting far-visible beacons. The Cologne structure is based on a competition design by Berlin architect Arnold Hartmann. Today it is a quiet monument in leafy Marienburg – a piece of the empire's culture of remembrance.
