Escher Seen

Two gravel-pit lakes in Cologne's northwest: one welcomes swimmers as an open-air lido, the other is reserved for an angling club – together they cover 28.2 hectares of water.

The Escher Seen are located in the Esch/Auweiler district in the northwest of Cologne, between the neighbourhoods of Pesch and Esch/Auweiler. They were formed as a result of gravel extraction that took place from the 1950s through to the 1980s.

The two lakes have a combined water surface area of 28.2 hectares. The northern lake accounts for 16.2 hectares of that, while the southern lake covers 12 hectares.

The two bodies of water differ in how they can be accessed: the northern lake is open to the public and has been used as an open-air lido since 1988. The southern lake is fenced off and managed exclusively by an angling club.

The two lakes also differ in depth: the southern lake is the deeper of the two, reaching up to 18 metres, while the northern lake has a maximum depth of 16 metres.
