University Quarter
In the district Neustadt/Süd
The 'Univiertel' is the everyday name for the student residential area around Rathenauplatz and Zülpicher Straße. History bears it out: when the University of Cologne reopened in 1919, it was first based here in Neustadt-Süd, in the Römerpark. Although the campus moved about a kilometre and a half to Lindenthal in 1934, students kept living and partying in the old quarter. To this day it is defined by affordable (once very affordable) flats, bookshops and cafés — and forms part of the area officially called the Rathenau Quarter.
