Belgian Quarter
In the district Neustadt/Nord
The Belgian Quarter sits in the southern part of Cologne's Neustadt-Nord district and ranks among the city's most sought-after and expensive residential areas. Its name comes from streets honouring Belgian cities such as Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels and Liège, along with provinces and regions like Brabant, Limburg and Flanders. The Maastrichter, Venloer and Utrechter streets add further nods to Dutch cities.

'All of Holland and Belgium'
Als der Stadtrat 1884 die neuen Straßen der Erweiterung benannte, wollte er hier ausdrücklich „ganz Holland und Belgien sich versammeln lassen“. So entstand ein ganzes Viertel voller Antwerpener, Genter, Brüsseler und Lütticher Straßen, ergänzt um Brabant, Limburg und Flandern — und mit Maastrichter, Venloer und Utrechter Straße auch die niederländischen Nachbarn. Bis heute ist das Belgische Viertel das Quartier, in dem man an fast jeder Ecke in ein anderes Land „abbiegt“.
Brüsseler Platz — Cologne's living room
Rund um die Kirche St. Michael wurde der Brüsseler Platz seit dem Weltjugendtag 2005 zum sommerlichen Freiluft-Treffpunkt für junge Kölner — mit Bier vom Kiosk auf den Kirchenstufen. Was die einen als „Kölner Wohnzimmer“ feiern, bringt den Anwohnern laue Nächte mit hunderten Feiernden. Seit 2008 gibt es Beschwerden, 2011 bestätigte das Verwaltungsgericht eine Sperrzeit — das Ringen zwischen Szenefreiheit und Nachtruhe hält bis heute an.
Chic Belgique
Entlang der Brüsseler Straße reihen sich Boutiquen, Galerien, Goldschmieden und Szenekneipen. Das Belgische Viertel zählt heute zu den teuersten und beliebtesten Wohnlagen Kölns; 2010 kürte es das Magazin „Prinz“ zum lebenswertesten Stadtteil der Stadt. Die Interessengemeinschaft „Chic Belgique“ pflegt seit 2004 diesen Ruf als Kreativ- und Modeviertel.

Did you know?
The street names of the Belgian Quarter are a political symbol of friendship: in 1884 Cologne's council expressly wanted to 'gather all of Holland and Belgium' — geography played no part, it was about good neighbourliness.
The later mayor of Cologne, Theo Burauen, lived at Brüsseler Platz 20 before the war and returned to the quarter after 1945 — it was long an address of the Cologne bourgeoisie too.
