Vogt (reeve/bailiff)

In the Middle Ages a Vogt was an official appointed by a territorial or ecclesiastical lord who took charge of the administration, jurisdiction and military protection of a territory. Ecclesiastical Vögte represented the secular interests of dioceses and monasteries. Such advocacies often gave rise to their own seats of lordship.
