eastern colonisation

Eastern colonisation (also Ostsiedlung) refers to the expansion of Frankish and later German settlers toward the east during the early and high Middle Ages. It opened up sparsely settled or abandoned areas, founded villages and sometimes reoccupied older sites. The process lastingly reshaped linguistic, territorial and settlement boundaries.
