Upper Quarter

The Duchy of Guelders was divided into four quarters; the Upper Quarter (Roermond) was the southeastern part, separated from the rest of the duchy. It lay on both sides of the Meuse and the Lower Rhine and was a heavily contested strategic area. After the War of the Spanish Succession, it was partitioned among several powers.
