In spatial planning, a medium-order centre is a municipality that provides its surrounding area with higher-order facilities and services, such as secondary schools, hospitals or specialist shops. In the hierarchy it ranks between the basic centres and the higher-order centres. The classification is set out in state and regional development plans.
