Mairie

During the period of French rule around 1800, a Mairie was the lowest municipal administrative unit, headed by a Maire (mayor). The system was introduced in the territories occupied by France. After the end of French rule, the Mairie was in many places converted into the Prussian Bürgermeisterei (mayoralty).
