loess

Loess is a yellowish-brown, fine-grained sediment deposited by the wind during the ice ages. It gives rise to particularly fertile, easily worked soils, which is why loess regions have long been intensively farmed. On the Lower Rhine, loess covers large parts of the higher terraces.
