Limes

The Limes was the Roman Empire's border system of ramparts, palisades, watchtowers and forts. In Germania it separated Roman territory from free Germania; the Vorderer Limes denotes a straightened section. With the 'fall of the Limes' around 259/260 AD the Romans abandoned this frontier.
