prince-elector

A prince-elector was one of the few imperial princes in the Holy Roman Empire who held the right to elect the Roman-German king and later emperor. They included ecclesiastical rulers such as the Archbishop of Cologne as well as secular princes. Their privileged status was firmly established by the Golden Bull of 1356.
