mayoralty

In the 19th century, especially in the Prussian Rhine Province, the mayoralty was a lower administrative unit combining one or more municipalities under a single mayor. It derived from the French mairie and in some cases lasted into the 20th century. It was later replaced by the district office or the unified municipality.
